Al Bilad newspaper Inside Meryl Streep’s life as a mother, grandmother, and Oscar-winning actress – 2024-06-29 14:28:02

Three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep, 75, continues to thrive as a Hollywood star, mother and grandmother.
Streep is the mother of four adult children she shares with sculptor Don Gummer, 77: Henry, 44, Mamie, 40, Grace, 38, and Louisa, 33.
Streep and Gomer were married in 1978, and it was announced in October of 2023 that they had been separated “for over 6 years,” according to the Devil Wears Prada star. “While they will always care for each other, they have chosen separate lives.”
In those six years, Streep has become a grandmother of five children: Henry and his wife Tamrin have a son and a daughter, Mamie and her husband Mehar Sethi also share a son and a daughter, while Grace and her husband — music producer Mark Ronson — recently had a daughter in 2023.
Although she has kept her personal life private since receiving her first of 21 Academy Award nominations (a record for an actor) for her appearance in 1978’s The Deer Hunter, Streep has commented on enjoying her status as a grandmother. “I’m going to go out and ruin her life,” she joked with the late Glenda Jackson in a 2019 Interview magazine chat about anticipating the arrival of Mammy’s son. “I specialize in unsolicited advice.”
Most recently at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in May, Streep offered more insight during a “Rendez-Vous with Meryl Streep” event with journalist Didier Allouche. “It never ends,” the honorary Palme d’Or winner said. “I haven’t seen enough movies, I have four grown kids, I have five grandchildren, so I don’t sit around and watch enough movies.”
She says her family remains a top priority. “It’s a busy life, but I signed up for it and this is what I have,” she added, shouting out her Big Little Lies producers and Nicole Kidman co-stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman. “Everyone has their own production company. And I had a production company: Kids! This is what I chose!
This isn’t the first time Streep has pointed out that while she’s worked hard to keep her on-screen career going, family comes first. “Motherhood, marriage, it’s a balancing act especially when you have a job that you find rewarding. It’s a challenge but it’s the best kind of challenge.”
It was her co-star in the 1985 film Out of Africa, Robert Redford, who advised Streep to keep her family life private. “Robert Redford taught me that when they were kids, they’re not your props. I really admired the way he protected his family. It’s something I consciously emulated.”
In the years since Streep enjoyed that “busy life” as a mother and grandmother, her work in Hollywood has continued — although it appears less and less on the big screen. Most recently nominated for an Oscar for 2017’s The Post, she’s since dabbled in more TV roles than ever before: from Big Little Lies in 2019 to an episode of Extrapolations last year to a role in the murder-mystery comedy Just Murders on the Block.
In the fourth season of the hit Hulu hit (premiering August 27), the star will reprise her role as actress Loretta Durkin opposite Selena Gomez’s boyfriend, Martin Short, and her old, complicated co-star Steve Martin. And Streep, more talented than ever, may receive a belated birthday gift for her work on the show’s third season on July 17 — the day of the Emmy nominations.
