New Orleans Police are having difficulty preventing some people from consuming confiscated marijuana inside their headquarters, and this problem is not with the two officers, but rather with rats that have been infesting the building for years.

“The rats are eating our marijuana,” said Anne Kirkpatrick, the police chief in the city located in the southern state of Louisiana, adding: “They all show signs of (drug) use.”

Kirkpatrick made her comments during a city council meeting earlier this week, according to local media.

Rats and cockroaches have long infested the police department headquarters, which was originally built in 1968.

Kirkpatrick said in statements reported by the Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate, “The matter is not limited to the police headquarters only, but affects all areas. The filth has exceeded all limits.”

She added: “The cleaning (team) deserves an award for their work beyond their capacity.”

The city has nearly 400,000 people, and is famous for its bustling nightlife, in addition to its distinguished history as a former Spanish and French colony, which influences local culture and food customs to this day.

Police in New Orleans have been seeking to establish a new headquarters for years.

One of the policemen told the newspaper: “The situation is terrible.”

“To be honest, I don’t think (the city) ever recovered from Hurricane Katrina,” he added, referring to the catastrophic hurricane that caused massive damage to the city in 2005.
