Millions of people around the world use the job search platform LinkedIn. The platform has long been viewed as a professional space for an employee to network or search for better job opportunities. However, LinkedIn may soon become more than just a job search site. Jobs.

In an unusual move similar to TikTok, LinkedIn confirmed that it is working on a feature that we all already know, which is short videos, also known as “reels.”

According to a report by TechRadar, LinkedIn said it is testing introducing a short-form video feed to the platform focused on professional networking and career development, in a move that represents a major departure from LinkedIn’s traditional landscape, heralding a new era of dynamic content and interactive engagement within its community.

“Vertical streaming of videos”

The report also added that the journey towards this feature began when Austin Knoll, Director of Strategy at McKinney, stumbled upon a prototype of a video feed located within LinkedIn’s navigation bar, and with a quick tap on the “Video” tab, users are taken to a vertical stream of videos. Brief and poignant.

The company also told TechRadar that videos are the preferred format for learning for its users and hence, the feature is being tested so that users can easily find relevant videos.

The report also added that the feature is in early testing stage as of now and most people will not be able to use it.

For her part, social media consultant, Rhea Freeman, said she is not surprised that LinkedIn is experimenting with short-form videos, and believes they could attract younger users.

She added to the Daily Mail: “It is a trend that has swept social media platforms and gained popularity,” noting that “if this leads to an increase in the time people spend on LinkedIn, this is a win for the company.”

Professional networking and career development

It is understood that LinkedIn will not lose its focus on professional networking and career development.

“I think it’s important for each platform to maintain its identity,” Freeman added. “Social media apps have always been inspired to create their own versions of features from the very successful app TikTok, which is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.”

At its core, the introduction of short video streaming represents more than just a technology upgrade, it also symbolizes a cultural shift within the LinkedIn community, and as professionals embrace the power of visual storytelling, the platform becomes a hub for creativity, collaboration, and collaborative learning.
