Belgium national team coach Domenico Tedesco confirmed that right-back Thomas Meunier has ten days left to regain full fitness and will join the team’s squad for the European Football Championship.
Meunier remained in Belgium to receive treatment for a hamstring injury, and Tedesco had until Sunday to choose his replacement before the team’s opening match against Slovakia in Group E later on Monday.
Tedesco told reporters about Meunier: He will be able to join the team within a week and a half. This is one of the reasons why the lineup has not changed. I didn’t want to give up Meunier because he showed great motivation to recover. Glad that the injury is not too bad and that he can still come to Germany.
Meunier will also miss Belgium’s second match in Group E against Romania next Saturday, but he has a chance to recover before the last match in the group against Ukraine on June 26.
Belgium was severely affected by injuries in defense during the period leading up to the 2024 European Championship, and Axel Witsel is also likely to miss the match against Slovakia.
The main defenders, Jan Vertonghen and Artur Tiat, returned to training after their absence from the field, but it is not certain that they will participate in Monday’s match from the beginning.
