The first commercial quantum computer, delivered to a private company in the European Union, was inaugurated at the headquarters of OVHcloud, which includes a data center in Croix, near the French city of Lille, in a revolution that the company also intends to put at the service of civil society.
Quantum computers are expected to bring about a radical transformation in the field of informatics, thanks to the enormous computing power they possess, unlike classical machines.
This computer, developed by the Paris-based company Quandela, is called MosaiQ, and takes the form of a 1.85-meter-high tower containing different modules connected by cables, in a blue metal box.
The amount of this acquisition exceeds one million euros, according to a source familiar with the file.
“It is revolutionary (…) to be able to provide widespread access to a quantum computer” because it will be available “to the world of industry, but also to the world of research, education and students,” said Secretary of State for Digital Affairs Sylvie Rotayo.
In France, the National Center for Scientific Research already has this type of computer, which exceeds the power of traditional computers equipped with silicon processors.
These computers use quantum bits called qubits, which are the building blocks of quantum computing that have an infinite number of possible states that can overlap (0 and 1 at the same time) and become entangled, whereas bits in classical computers have only two possible states ( 0 or 1).
It is estimated that the first consumer quantum computers will only be available within a decade, and the technology is not expected to be fully developed until 2050.
