A statement from the Football Association of Hungary revealed, on Monday, the health condition of player Barnabas Varga, who suffered a very severe injury during the match between Hungary and Scotland in the final round of the group stage of the Euro 2024 tournament.
In a cinematic scenario, Hungary won 1-0 over Scotland, which is now competing to qualify for the round of 16 as the best of three.
Varga suffered a very severe injury that reminded us of the scene of Christian Eriksen, the Danish player, in the last edition of the Euro Championship.
The statement said: “Several bones in Barnabas Varga’s face were broken following the collision during the match, and he also suffered a concussion.”
He added: “The attacker is likely to undergo surgery. He will spend the night in the hospital in Stuttgart.”
What happened?
- Varga was injured in the 74th minute during the Scotland match and was quickly carried off the pitch.
- The injury occurred during a joint ball with Scottish goalkeeper Jean.
- The 29-year-old player fell violently on the back of his neck, and his teammates intervened to help him, forming a circle around him and spreading a brown sheet after he seemed unable to move.
- The medical staff intervened after a period of hesitation to treat him and evacuate him from the field, amid applause from the fans and players who were affected by what happened.
- The players rallied around Varga because of the difficult scene, and the same happened with Erxen, regardless of the nature of the injury.
- Barnabas Varga’s condition is now stable.
- The player is in a hospital in Stuttgart.
