The Arab Regional Center for World Heritage at its headquarters in Manama organized a workshop on “Basics of Preserving Urban Heritage,” in cooperation with the National Council for Culture, Arts and Literature in Kuwait and the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, between April 21 and 24, 2024, with the participation of a group of cultural heritage experts from Kuwait.

The third day of the workshop witnessed the presence and participation of His Excellency Sheikh Khalifa bin Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Arab Regional Center for World Heritage.

His Excellency said that the urban cultural heritage in the Gulf countries plays an essential role in documenting the history and development of the region, stressing that it reflects ancient architectural traditions, great cultural diversity, and extensive civilizational developments. He added that in light of the increasing global interest in this heritage, many official cultural institutions are making greater efforts over the past years to ensure its preservation and transmission to future generations.

He also pointed to the pioneering experience of the Kingdom of Bahrain in this field, as it achieved many positive steps, the most important of which is the inclusion of the Pearling Path site in Muharraq on the World Heritage List, which included restoration and preservation projects for many buildings classified as urban heritage, and the Culture Authority succeeded in It was completed according to the best international standards, which makes it a model that can be used by all sister countries in the region.

The workshop aimed to enhance basic knowledge in the field of urban heritage restoration among attendees. It also formed a space for exchanging experiences and information between specialists in Kuwait and Bahrain, and encouraged critical thinking in discussing and evaluating the best methodologies for heritage preservation in the region. This workshop will be followed by a second phase that will be held in the country. Kuwait, with the aim of building on the knowledge acquired by the participants, which will give them the opportunity to apply this knowledge at the local level.
