With national legislative industry par excellence, the members of the Shura Council surrounded Bahraini society and the state with regulatory legal protection after it approved in its session the proposal for a law regulating artificial intelligence technologies and its uses, and referred it to the government to put it in the form of a draft law, after its drafting was discussed with 14 relevant government agencies.
Head of the Legislative and Legal Committee of the Shura Council, Dalal Al-Zayed, said that the Artificial Intelligence Law is one of the most difficult pieces of legislation to be drafted by any legislator. The reason is that it is subject to constant changes and the introduction of new fields, and some things may radically change within days.
She pointed out that the Council’s agreement with the proposal would take the scope of legislative precedence at the region level, noting that the law consists of 38 articles.
In turn, Council Member Khaled Al-Maskati stressed that artificial intelligence is a double-edged sword and is a necessary evil, and that the European Union came with the first initiative that touched on intelligence and put in place the necessary legislation.
He said: “We need legislation that is appropriate as a start, and we need to adapt this legislation from time to time because artificial intelligence is constantly developing,” noting that there must be global coordination and between countries to address the misuse of these technical activities in order to apply penalties to those who abuse these applications.
This project addresses the vacancy in the artificial intelligence file, which made the Council members stand up with respect and thank those in charge of the draft law in the Council.
