It would also be important to take social aspects into account, as well as measures to create more and better jobs.
Vienna (OTS) – The Austrian federal government announced today that it will award higher state subsidies in the future if the components used in photovoltaic systems come from Europe. This “Made in Europe” bonus is a measure that will contribute to achieving European production targets, ensuring the security of supply with important technologies and creating employment in Europe. “The regulation is a first step towards making Europe a crisis-proof and secure production and employment location,” says Tobias Schweitzer, Head of Economics at the AK Vienna.
However, it would be important to consider social criteria and measures to create more and better jobs. “Unfortunately, the regulation stops halfway. It is a missed opportunity that the social and employment policy dimension has been forgotten. State subsidies are not an end in themselves, but an instrument for actively shaping economic policy,” says Tobias Schweitzer. From the AK’s point of view, the regional bonus should be supplemented by a bonus for good employment, compliance with social and labor law regulations, job and location security, and quality-assured training and further education. “We will neither be able to build up the necessary production capacities in the narrower sense nor achieve the energy transition in Europe if we forget about employees and their concerns,” stresses Tobias Schweitzer.
Background: With its Green Deal Industrial Plan and its first implementation step through the Net-Zero Industry Act, the European Commission has set ambitious production targets for the Union. By 2030, 40% of the technologies important for the digital and ecological transition are to be manufactured in Europe. These technologies include photovoltaics, wind power, batteries and technologies for future-proof power grids. In this context, funding criteria are a powerful and effective tool for achieving the goals.
