Finally the international master Mohammad Fahad Rahman has a smile on his face. After five years of continuous efforts, he achieved the first norm of Grandmaster. Fahad got the desired norm from the ‘Hanoi Grandmasters-3 tournament’ held in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Fahad achieved his goal by defeating host Fidemaster Ban Gia Hau in the last round. In this tournament, he was the runner-up in the tie-breaking system, even though he had 7 points with international master Quezon Daniel of the Philippines.

In 2019, Fahad won the title of International Master by becoming the champion in Asian 3.2 zone in Dhaka. Since then he has been playing to become a grandmaster.

After getting the International Master title, Fahad was playing for the last five years with the goal of achieving the Grandmaster norm in the country and abroad. Many times he came to the shore and drowned. Sometimes it’s really disappointing. Still not giving up, Fahad finally saw the face of success.

To become a Grandmaster he has to fulfill two more norms. 2500 rating house should also go. Currently his rating is 2426. 20 increased from this tournament. Fahad needs only 54 rating. Fahad passed the first step on the way to become the sixth grandmaster to achieve the first norm.

At present there are five Grandmasters in the country. They are Niaz Morshed, Ziaur Rahman, Rifat bin Sattar, Abdullah Al Rakib and Enamul Hossain Rajib.

Rajiv was last Grandmaster in 2008. After 16 years, Bangladesh did not get the sixth Grandmaster. Now it remains to be seen how soon Fahad will achieve the remaining two norms and become the sixth Grandmaster of the country.
