Afraid of being attacked by Iran, Jordan closes its airspace

AMMAN – Jordan temporarily closed the country’s airspace for all incoming and outgoing flights starting yesterday.

As reported by Al Mamlaka, Sunday (14/4/2024), two planes belonging to the Fly Dubai airline that were flying to Israel had to return to the United Arab Emirates following the closure, according to Channel 12 television.

Jordan’s Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission said the airspace closure was carried out to protect the safety of civil aviation in the country as the risk of conflict in West Asia increases.

The commission decided to close Jordanian airspace after conducting an aviation security risk assessment based on internationally recognized standards.

However, the decision will be reviewed and updated in accordance with the latest developments, the commission said in a statement.

Previously, Al Mamlaka reported that the Chairman of the Jordanian Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission, Haitham Misto, said that disruption to Jordanian air traffic had affected the Global Positioning System (GPS), causing aircraft in the region to use alternative navigation systems.
