Washington (AP) – The Republicans advanced their huge package of fiscal cuts and border security for a key commission of the House of Representatives during an unusual Sunday night vote, while the defenders of the deficit that had blocked the measure two days before allowed them to advance due to an alleged progress in the negotiations on the expense cuts in the package.
The fiscal plan includes the proposal to impose a five percent tax on remittances sent by migrants.
The president of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, held an encounter with Republican legislators shortly before the vote and told the press that some changes had been agreed, but did not come into details, just saying that it was “just some minor modifications. It is not something huge.”
The Democratic members of the Commission pressed for more details, but the president of the Budget Commission of the House of Representatives, Jodey Arrington, said the bill was still in negotiation.
“Deliberations continue at this time,” said Arrington. “They will continue during the week, and I suspect that until the moment we put this great and beautiful bill in plenary.”
The four conservatives who have been expressing their concerns about the impact of the bill on the deficit voted so that the measure could advance with a 17-16 vote.
More negotiations are planned, but Johnson seeks to take the bill to the camera’s plenary before the week ends.

First failed attempt
The first time the Republicans tried to advance the bill in the Budget Commission last week, the defenders of the deficit joined the Democrats to vote against informing the measure to the plenary of the Chamber.
Republicans who criticize the measure indicated that the new spending of the bill and tax cuts are concentrated at the beginning of the project, while measures to compensate for the cost are at the end. They seek to accelerate the new work requirements that Republicans want to implement for participants suitable in Medicaid. These requirements would not take effect until 2029 under the current bill.
“We are issuing checks that we cannot charge, and our children will pay the price,” said representative Chip Roy. “Something needs to change, or they will not get my support.”
In its nucleus, the extensive legislative package permanently extends the existing income tax cuts that were approved during Trump’s first mandate, in 2017, and adds other temporary cuts that the president announced during his campaign, including non -taxes on tips, payment of overtime and interest paid payments for cars. The Federal Budget Committee for Responsible, a non -partisan control group, estimates that the bill is configured to add approximately 3.3 billion dollars to the debt in the next decade.
Democrats oppose overwhelmingly to the measure, which Republicans have labeled as “the law of a huge and beautiful bill.” Representative Pramila Jayopal, described him as “a huge and beautiful betrayal.”
“This expense bill is terrible, and I think the American people know it,” said representative Jim Clyburn to the “State of the Union” program of CNN on Sunday.
Johnson not only has to address the concerns of deficit defenders within his party. It also faces pressure from centrists who will be observing cautiously the changes proposed to Medicaid, food assistance programs and the reversal of clean energy tax credits.
