Indian actress Kankalta passed away after a long illness. He was 63 years old at the time of his death. Kankalata breathed his last at his home in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday (May 6). It is known that he was suffering from dementia and Parkinson’s disease for the past few years (since 2021).
Apart from movies, Kankalta gained popularity by acting in television serials. This famous actress of Malayalam cinema was born in Ochira of Kollam district. Has acted in more than 300 movies and several popular television serials in Malayalam and Tamil.
As a child, acting on the stage helped Kankalat. And the stage was the source of his family’s income. He spent his life in the midst of severe financial hardship in his childhood.

Director PA Backer was impressed by Kankalta’s performance on stage and cast him in his film. Played the lead role in the movie ‘Unarathupattu’. Although unfortunately the movie did not release in theatres. But one of the producers of this movie, Lenin Rajendran, later cast Kankalta in his own movie. Kankalta’s first big screen debut was in the movie ‘Chillu’ in 1982.
When Doordarshan television started airing serials in the eighties, he played the lead role in a serial called ‘Tooru Puviryunut’. It became very popular very quickly. This serial of 13 episodes started to be seen by people in Kerala at that time. As a result, the actress became the daughter of the audience. Later in the nineties, Kankalata became a part of several popular mega serials of private television channels.
Moreover, Kankalata continued to act as the sister or mother of the main characters in several movies. His notable movies include, ‘Kiridam’, ‘Kauravar’, ‘Harikrishnan’s’, ‘Bandhukkal Sathrukkal’, ‘Chenkol’, ‘Spadikam’, ‘Adyathe Kanmani’ and Oru ‘Jatharamozhi’.
Due to illness, the number of works decreased towards the end. Kankalat’s last movie ‘Pukkalam’ released in 2023. It was built by Ganesh Raj. State Minister for Culture Saji Cherian expressed grief over his death.
