In London this week, Idris Elba went with relatives of the victims to Parliament for an impressive demonstration. On Parliament Square, on the lawn next to the House of Commons, the clothes of the victims were arranged in rows to give an idea of the extent of the phenomenon.
Assaults, brawls, score-settling… Knives are regularly used on the streets of the town. Young adults, high school students and even college students, the victims are young. And the weapons are often the same: machetes or “zombie knives”, long ornate blades. At the BBC, Idris Elba calls for radical measures: “How does the culprit get the gun? ? The mother of one victim told me that it was the post office that gave the knife to the person who killed her son. The post office ! Banning zombie knives and machetes won’t solve the problem, but it would symbolically show that we’re fed up and want this to end.”
Since 2016, the sale of these knives is normally prohibited. But there are gaps and they can be easily ordered online. Last summer the Prime Minister promised a new law, but it has not yet been promulgated.
A song and a clip to convey the message
Idris Elba’s commitment is not new: he was already involved in a movement in favor of working-class neighborhoods, and this campaign is part of it. It is called “Don’t stop your future” which could be translated as “Don’t stop your future”. He is therefore clearly aimed at young people.
This time the actor also gives voice: he sings a song entitled to spread his message Knives lowered (Put down the knives), the proceeds of which will be entirely donated to the associations. In the clip, the actor appears in what appears to be the House of Commons, facing MPs who he considers to be inactive.
There is also a clothing line to accompany this campaign, again the money must only go towards this cause.
