For five consecutive months, Greece has shown higher inflation than the European average, a sign that profiteering has not been addressed
Inflation in Greece has been above the European average for 5 consecutive months, a sign that the government of N.D. it leaves profligacy unchecked. At the same time, the market keeps a small “basket” for the Skreka measures that came into force yesterday, because it seems that they leave households unprotected in many cases, especially in terms of food prices.
Greece’s inflation remained at 3.2% in February, while it fell to 2.6% in the Eurozone, according to Eurostat’s preliminary estimates, which show that things in our country remain worse. It is recalled that inflation was 3.2% in January in Greece (from 3.7% in December) and 2.8% for the Eurozone (from 2.9% in December).
Basket without food
It is typical that laundry detergents, dishwashing detergents, baby-children diapers, cleaners of all kinds, toothpastes, shampoos, shower gels, conditioners and soaps, which concern the measure of reducing the total discounts-benefits of suppliers to supermarkets by 30% with corresponding reduction in the initial prices of these products on the shelves, they fill the consumer’s basket by 25%. The remaining 75% is filled with food, a category of goods in which Greece emerged… runner-up in January 2024 at the Eurozone level as well.
The question, however, is what will happen to the coffers and the pocket of the consumer. This is because some nominal prices may decrease, but the offers will gradually decrease as well, so the average real prices will be “the same and the same”.
Fiesta Skreka is not convincing
At the same time, the Ministry of Development estimates that the prices of “more than 3,000 products” will be reduced by up to 15%, while also 15% will be the reduction in the initial prices of most infant milk products for first (0-6 months) and second (6 -12 months) of infant age that will immediately pass to the price on the shelf. However, there is much doubt as to whether they will be able to bring about the price reduction. Development Minister Kostas Skrekas held a communication show at a large supermarket chain yesterday on the occasion of the start of the implementation of the four structural government measures to deal with punctuality, while two months ago he said that no new interventions were needed to deal with punctuality in Greece.
“We have already monitored and found that the prices of baby milk on the shelf have decreased by at least 15% in the products we saw” K. Skrekas argued. His report concerned a large package whose price had reached 26.3 euros and is now available for “only” 22.4 euros.
“Accuracy and obscenity are not dealt with by communication shows. Shelf prices are not going to drop with direct links from supermarkets. No matter how much Mr. Skrekas tries to convince us that the picture will improve in the coming days, reality comes and refutes him” retorted the MP and head of the Development Department of SYRIZA-P.S. Christos Giannoulis.
The problem with baby milk
It hasn’t been long since the Competition Commission’s investigation into prices in Greece was made public, showing up to 213% more expensive than the cheapest price in the EU. at least for five first-age infant milk products available from major companies. Also, the corresponding five second-age baby milks at prices up to 197% more expensive, with the most glaring difference concerning Sweden, with twice the average income for each citizen compared to the Greek consumer.
In the first most egregious case of those published at the time, a product on the shelf at 3.48 euros for every 100 grams of product was 213% more expensive than the cheapest price in the EU, which based on this percentage is the 1.11 euros.
Accordingly, in the second most egregious case, a product that cost the Greek consumer 2.97 euros for every 100 grams of product was 197% more expensive than the cheapest price in the EU, therefore this cheapest price is 1 euro.
Moreover, as Mr. Giannoulis also noted: “The reduction of 3 euros in baby milk, which appreciated up to 200% in the two years of greed inflation, is far from the reduction of 10 and 12 euros, which would have been achieved if it had been adopted the proposal of SYRIZA-P.S. to impose a ceiling on the final shelf price’.
