Over the course of the year, there was a significant decline in the prices of buckwheat and long cucumbers, while, for example, the group of dairy products shows a slight upward trend in prices when studying prices in stores, he concludes the Latvian Traders Association (LTA).
Since the mid-1990s, the organization has regularly compared the prices of consumer goods in stores. When calculating average prices in the stores of retail companies, the price indicated on the tags is taken into account, without calculating the stock prices set by manufacturers.
Dairy products
LTA states that, compared to December last year, the largest drop in the group concerns ricotta, the price of which decreased by 0.30 euros; followed by butter, cheese.
There is a difference in the fluctuation of cheese prices, the price of “Dutch cheese” went from 12.71 euros to 10.98 euros, while the price of “Russian cheese” went from 12.79 euros to 11, 71 euros.
For sweet cream the price variations are almost imperceptible. The price increase in this group is observed for mayonnaise, which became more expensive by 0.07 euros.
In general, a stable trend of small price increases is visible, so prices of dairy products for sale will no longer decrease, LTA concludes.
Meat and bread
Over the year the price of doctor’s sausage fell by 11%. For anchovies on average by 0.15 euros, while for sausages it increased by 0.28 euros. Broilers have become cheaper. In general, the prices of meat products in production have stabilized after a significant increase, so their price will be stable or slightly lower.
The LTA highlights the drop in the price of buckwheat as a surprising feature, i.e. last December the price was 4.49 euros, now it is 3.11 euros. In second place is rice, the price of which has decreased by 38%.
The price of oatmeal has also fallen, semolina and flour are slightly cheaper. Prices of white bread and “Kuršu” bread decreased by 16% and 12%.
Almost unchanged in terms of prices are salt and sugar. On the other hand, pasta has become more expensive. However, the largest increase in this group was that of gray peas, with an increase of 0.53 euros.
Prices on the grain market continue to fall, so there may also be a slight decline in sales prices, the LTA admits.
Fruits and vegetables
In the fruit category, prices decreased for only two products, apples by 7% and lemons by 2%. On the other hand, the largest price increase was recorded by kiwis. For mandarins and bananas the average price increase is around 10%.
Almost all vegetables have become more expensive during the year. The largest price increase in this group is observed for carrots and onions -15%. The biggest changes can be observed for long cucumbers: last December their price was 2.59 euros, but now it is 1.51 euros.
Drinks
An increase in prices was also observed for the drinks group. The lowest price increase is for lemonade – 4% and for water (carbonated/non-carbonated) – 9%. A slightly higher increase is observed for multivitamin juices and champagne.
The price of coffee increased by 14%. The greatest price changes in this category are observed for teas, the price of tea in bags increased by 0.66 euros, that of loose tea by 0.45 euros. The price of “Coca-cola” has fallen (by about 2%), the same goes for tomato juice, LTA estimates.
