The impact of the recession and the loss of purchasing power of wages is reflected in an increase in debt, which affects nine out of 10 Argentine families, according to a study by the Centro de Almaceneros de Córdoba.

The largest amount of debt is on credit cards with 26%, followed by family debts with 10%, 9% with banks, 8% on services, school and taxes, 7% rent and credit and 5% with prepaid health insurance after the increases they registered during 2024.

As for credit card debts, the report revealed that they are mainly used for food purchases (54%), followed by fuel charges (16%), tax and service payments (12%), and clothing purchases (11%).

In the case of bank debts, 37% corresponds to credit card refinancing, indicating that many households are turning to this resource to manage their financial situation.

The survey found that 35% of respondents have just one debt, 57% have between two and three, while the remaining 8% have more than three debts, a situation that reflects the severity of the current economic crisis.

The report also details that 37.1% of debts are in regular status, while 40.7% are in administrative arrears and 22.2% are in judicial proceedings. In this regard, 11% of households in debt face salary seizures or account freezes due to non-payment.

Despite the high level of debt, 55% of respondents are confident that they will be able to regularise their debts in 2025, while 23% expect to do so before the end of 2024. However, 18% do not believe that they will be able to pay off all their debts.
