JAKARTA – PT PLN (Persero) through its subholding PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP) will utilize green ammonia in the operation of the Labuan Steam Power Plant (PLTU) in Banten. Efforts to accelerate this energy transition are reflected in the agenda of signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between PLN IP, PT Pupuk Kujang, and Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI Corporation) in Jakarta, Wednesday (21/8/2024).

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said that his party continues to innovate to reduce emissions in the electricity sector, one of which is through the use of green ammonia in PLTU. This breakthrough is PLN’s effort to accelerate the energy transition and support the Government’s target of achieving the Net Zero Emissions target by 2060.

“With this innovative collaboration, it is hoped that the use of green ammonia can be a substitute for coal, so that it can reduce emissions and of course in line with the government’s goal of realizing NZE by 2060,” said Darmawan.

PLN IP President Director Edwin Nugraha revealed that the use of green ammonia can reduce the use of coal for primary energy of PLTU. The plan is that the use of green ammonia will be implemented in the Banten 2 Labuan Generation Business Unit (UBP).

“Banten 2 Labuan PLTU will be used as a pilot project for the use of green ammonia in other PLTUs. If this is done, it will reduce carbon emissions produced by the electricity sector,” said Edwin.

To utilize green ammonia as primary energy, PLN Indonesia Power conducted a feasibility study by collaborating with PT Pupuk Kujang and IHI Corporation. Through this collaboration, PLN IP, IHI, and Pupuk Kujang will study the technical and economic aspects of the entire value chain, from the supply of green ammonia to the implementation of combustion.

Specifically, IHI will handle technical studies related to the ammonia combustion demonstration, PLN IP will provide the power plant and operating personnel, and Pupuk Kujang will handle the production and supply of green ammonia.

“This collaboration is an important step in our efforts to shift to more sustainable energy sources. Green ammonia has great potential to reduce carbon footprint and support a cleaner energy future in Indonesia,” said Edwin.

Meanwhile, President Director of PT Pupuk Kujang Maryono said that Pupuk Kujang supports collaboration on the use of green ammonia in reducing carbon emissions in power plants.

“As a green ammonia producer, Pupuk Kujang is very enthusiastic to be involved in this innovative study. This collaboration allows us to contribute to sustainable energy solutions exploring the potential of green ammonia which is in line with our commitment to environmental sustainability,” said Maryono.

IHI Corporation Associate Director Shinichi Takano welcomed the technological collaboration in the energy transition, especially innovations related to green ammonia.

“We are honored to be able to work with PLN Indonesia Power and Pupuk Kujang, our ammonia technology can help transform energy in Indonesia, paving the way for a greener future,” explained Takano.
