Through a letter, the Metropolitan Council of the College of Journalists of Chile seeks to urge President Gabriel Boric to diplomatically intercede supporting Australia to avoid the extradition of Julian Assange to the United States where he risks a sentence of more than one hundred years. “Collaboration to urge the United States to withdraw its extradition request, which will be decided this coming May 20,” the petition indicates. Until the closing of this note, it exceeded 500 headings.
Santiago. 17/05/2024. Through a letter addressed to President Gabriel Boric, the Metropolitan Council of the College of Journalists of Chile seeks that the Government speak out and make diplomatic efforts to help the international request for the United States to desist from the extradition of Julián Assange, who risks more one hundred years – 175 – in prison if he is convicted by the North American justice system that accuses him of the crime of conspiracy to commit computer intrusion under the Espionage Act.
“We do not want Chile to be the only country with a deaf ear to this approach, very different from the attitude demonstrated by other nations in the region such as Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Honduras and Mexico,” indicated the metropolitan regional organization in the letter that has hundreds of endorsements.
In less than 24 hours, the letter reached more than 500 signatures, including directors of Journalism Schools, academics, media directors, social leaders, congressmen and professionals from different areas such as José Miguel Labrín, director of the Journalism School of the University of Chile; Juan Pablo Figueroa, director of the School of Journalism at the Alberto Hurtado University; Faride Zerán, National Journalism Award winner and academic at the University of Chile; Bruno Sommer, founder of El Ciudadano; Víctor Hugo de la Fuente, director of Le Monde Diplomatique; Hugo Guzmán, director of El Siglo; Elisa Loncón, academic at the University of Santiago and former constituent. Senator Daniel Núñez, deputies Boris Barrera, Carmen Hertz and Tomás Hirsch also signed the petition.
On May 20, London’s High Court will decide whether the WikiLeaks founder is extradited to the United States, where he would face charges for publishing hundreds of thousands of leaked documents about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
