Starvation in the besieged Gaza Strip of Palestine is getting worse by the day. As a result, babies born in the region with abnormal birth weight are dying. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported this information on Tuesday (March 19) about doctors and medical workers there. Turkish media Anadolu Agency reported this news.
At a UN press conference in Geneva, WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris said, ‘Pregnant mothers there are underweight and suffering from various pregnancy complications due to malnutrition.’
“Increasingly we’re seeing children who are on the brink of death from starvation,” Harris said. They need to be fed frequently. Our task now is to set up malnutrition stabilization centers.’
He also said that they have already established a center in the south of Gaza and efforts are being made to establish a malnutrition stabilization center in the northern region as well. But building such a center requires ‘access and security’ to bring in the amount of equipment needed, which is not possible at the moment.
On October 7, Hamas fighters attacked southern Israel, triggering a protracted war in Gaza. According to Israeli figures, about 1,200 Israelis were killed in Hamas attacks that day. Meanwhile, armed fighters took 253 hostages to Gaza. In response to that attack, Israel launched a counterattack in Gaza on the same day.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, at least 31,800 people have been killed so far in the Israeli aggression. About 74 thousand more were injured.
According to the UN agency, famine is imminent in Gaza. Only a sustained influx of humanitarian aid and more supplies can save the lives of displaced Palestinians.
