Sources say the ‘serious national security threat’ is related to Russia wanting to put a nuclear weapon in space
Two sources familiar with the deliberations at the US Capitol said the information about the “serious national security threat” was related to Russia wanting to put a nuclear weapon in space, ABC reported.
According to the publication of the American media, the purpose is not to drop nukes on Earth, but possibly to use the weapon against satellites.
It is recalled that the chairman of the US House Intelligence Committee, Mike Turner, said on Wednesday that the committee made available to all members of Congress information about a “serious threat to national security”, which according to sources is related to Russia. Although Mike Turner and the White House remained vague about the nature of the “threat” in question, two sources and a US official told CNN it was related to Russia. One of the sources confirmed that “this is an extremely disturbing and destabilizing” Russian possibility “that we have recently been made aware of.”
“It’s a very worrying and very sensitive issue,” said a source, cited by the ABC, calling the issue a “big deal.” Although they did not directly address the issue, several members of Congress were quick to describe the issue as serious without causing public alarm.
“We will work together to deal with this matter, as we do all sensitive matters that are classified,” House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters on Capitol Hill Wednesday afternoon.
“I am asking President Biden to declassify all information related to this threat so that Congress, the administration and our allies can openly discuss the actions needed to respond to this threat,” Turner said. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said at Wednesday’s news conference that he had already scheduled a classified meeting with congressional leadership ahead of Turner’s request.
