ABBA musical “Mamma Mia!” is coming to Luxembourg

For the concert organizer Atelier, the “Family Entertainment & Comedy” area is becoming increasingly important – the target audience is there and demand is high. In addition to events for children – “Bibi Blocksberg”, “Peppa Pig” and the Heavysaurus metal concert – the studio also organizes annual musicals and events for families. While “Les Misérables” will be performed at the Rockhal this year, the original ABBA musical “Mamma Mia!” will come to Luxembourg in 2025 as part of its “International Tour”.

Now in its 25th year, the musical has reached more than 70 million viewers in 50 productions in 16 different languages ​​since its premiere in London in 1999. It has been performed in more than 450 cities worldwide.

“Mamma Mia!” is about friendship, family and love. In the musical, which includes 22 ABBA songs – from “Dancing Queen” to “Money, Money, Money” – young Sophie, who lives with her mother on one of the Greek islands, tries to find out who her father is . The story comes from the British author Catherine Johnson, the compositions by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus.

The redecorated Rockhal as a stage

In 2008, the musical was made into a film directed by Phyllida Lloyd and is still one of the most successful film musicals ever. In 2018, the successful film even received a sequel: “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.” The producer of the two films is Judy Craymer.

There will be five performances of “Mamma Mia!” at the Rockhal from March 7th to 9th, 2025. This will be redecorated specifically for this purpose, as was announced at the studio’s press conference on Tuesday. For this purpose, 30 actors and 7 musicians will be on stage in Esch/Belval.

The “International Tour 2024/25” will open in Shanghai in May this year. The musical then travels to Hangzhou, Beijing, Hong Kong, Dublin, Monte Carlo, Zurich, Munich, Berlin, Frankfurt and Milan, among others.

The Atelier has planned around 140 events for this year so far – and new ones are being added regularly. Over 25 of the planned events will take place in the Rockhal. Festivals such as Usina in Dudelange or Siren’s Call in Grund as well as the concert series in Neimënster and on the Luxexpo site (Luxexpo Open Air) are among the highlights of the coming months.
