MADRID, Spain.- The Juan Abrantes University Stadium, once a symbol of Cuban university sports, is today in a deplorable state, a victim of abandonment and lack of maintenance. Located on San Rafael Street, next to the University of Havana, this sports complex once vibrated with the energy of games, competitions and mass events.
Its history dates back to 1902, when the University of Havana was established in Loma de Aróstegui. In its beginnings, the stadium was the scene of various disciplines such as rugby, athletics, baseball and basketball. The figure of Julio Antonio Mella, who promoted university sports, also marks the history of the stadium.
In 1922 its construction began, completed in 1939. Since then, it has hosted important sporting events, including the Interschool Games, precursors of the Caribe, Manicatos and Tainos Games. In 1959, the stadium was renamed Juan Abrantes Fernández in homage to the deceased guerrilla commander.

In 2018, there were rumors of a possible closure of the stadium, but measures were only implemented to prevent students from sitting in the stands or gathering in risk areas.

In 2019 it was confirmed that several stadium facilities were in danger of collapsing. Despite the risk, the Language Center of the University of Havana and the Physical Education chairs continued to operate on the upper floors.
Currently, despite all its history, the Juan Abrantes University Stadium is in a state of abandonment and total deterioration. The stands have cracks and falling material, the athletics track is cracked and covered in weeds, and the pool is empty, with a large puddle and garbage inside.
