A28 road surface near Zeist raised by groundwater

This is the section of road surface in the Vollenhovetunnel, the sunken part of the motorway around Zeist.

Early next week, the Rijkswaterstaat will place concrete blocks on the emergency lanes as a counterweight. It is not yet clear whether this measure will be sufficient. This will have to be seen. Tonight the emergency lane will be closed in both directions and the maximum speed will be reduced from 100 to 90 kilometers per hour.

A7 in Friesland

The movement of the road surface is still minimal and was noticed because Rijkswaterstaat installed a monitoring system in the tunnel box last month. This was done because the tunnel has a similar foundation structure to that of the Prinses Margriet tunnel on the A7 in Friesland.

A year ago it had to be completely closed for several months, because the road surface there too had risen due to high groundwater levels. The damage was considerable at the time, but now it is about preventive measures, Rijkswaterstaat stresses. “This can prevent a problematic situation like the Princess Margriet tunnel.”
