A modern hangar, with a capacity of over 2,000 tonnes to store crops, has been built on Kinanira Hill, in the commune of Giteranyi, Muyinga province. This infrastructure was built as part of a government project financed by the World Bank through the Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Program (NELSAP), in addition to work related to the Rusumo project. This modernity will enable the population to effectively manage their crops and prevent thefts which were frequent.
It is a large hangar that can hold more than 2,000 tons of crops.
One of the aspirations of the residents of Kinanira Hill, Giteranyi Commune in Muyinga Province, has been fulfilled. Today, this population finally has a modern storage shed, a long-awaited wish. According to Ms. Floride Nduwayezu, administrator of the Giteranyi Commune, the lack of such a shed was a major concern for the population. This wish was included in the list of priority projects of the commune and was proposed to development partners, who then executed it. This infrastructure was built as part of a government project financed by the World Bank through the Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Program (NELSAP), in addition to the works related to the Rusumo project.
As explained by Epimaque Murengerantwari, coordinator of the Local Area Development Program (LADP), it is a large shed that can hold more than 2,000 tons of crops. When we visited, more than 215 farmers from Kinanira hill had already stored their maize crops in this shed. According to this executive, it is a modern infrastructure that meets the standard norms of such sheds. A drying ground has been set up to allow for adequate drying of the grains brought in while they are not yet perfectly dry. Sanitary facilities have also been built.
The beneficiaries are delighted
The population of this locality is very satisfied with the development of this shed. As Nsengiyumva Léonidas, a resident of this hill, pointed out, this storage shed came at the right time. “The population of Kinanira lives largely from agriculture, and fortunately our lands are fertile. But the problem was that we lacked a place to store our harvest,” he says. Before the installation of this modern shed, the harvest was kept in their houses. This was dangerous because not only was the management not optimal for everyone, but the harvest was also exposed to thieves.

Devotte Ininahazwe: “The storage shed was really a priority for us.”
The same goes for Dévotte Ininahazwe, who lives on the same hill. “The storage shed was really a priority for us,” she insists. In an attempt to save their harvest, Ininahazwe told us that they had the idea of requesting the use of a classroom in one of the surrounding schools to store their harvest. This allowed them to avoid problems of mismanagement and theft at home. However, this solution was only possible during the holiday periods. With the start of the school year, these farmers were forced to vacate this classroom. This is how they expressed their wish to local officials.
In order to effectively manage this public asset, the people of Kinanira Hill have formed a management committee for this shed. A storekeeper and a caretaker have been recruited for this purpose. The local administration ensures the availability of pesticides needed to protect these stocks against pests. Murengerantwari encourages all users of this modern shed to take care of it for the benefit of all.
