The number of cases of “lumpy skin” disease that affects livestock is increasing on a daily basis in the areas of Al Jabal Al Akhdar, especially the city of Al Bayda, reaching 1,000 cases in Al Bayda alone, amid fears of the disease spreading among livestock, which threatens livestock in the region.
“Lumpy skin” is a viral disease that mainly affects cows, and to a lesser extent sheep. It is transmitted to animals by insects or by consuming contaminated food and drink. Its symptoms are high temperatures, sinusitis, and the appearance of pimples on the skin.
The Libyan News Agency quoted Saleh Suleiman Boumbarka, Director of the Animal Wealth Department in the Jabal Al-Akhdar region, as saying that the administration has so far monitored the infection of more than (950) heads, confirming the death of more than (100) heads, which means that the amount of dead animals in the infected livestock exceeds (10). %).
Bou Mbarka explained that the disease began spreading among livestock in Jabal al-Akhdar, following Hurricane Daniel, which struck the region last September, calling on the authorities to intervene urgently to save citizens’ wealth from loss.
Veterinary teams facing the disease lack the most basic medical and therapeutic capabilities to combat the disease, so it seems very urgent to provide the capabilities of insecticides, vaccines, and immunizations.
Bou Mbarka pointed out that they did not receive any support from the competent authorities during the past three months, which exacerbated the crisis and threatens a further spread of the disease if it is not confronted.
According to the “Zoetis” platform, which specializes in the field of animal health, lumpy skin is an infectious disease transmitted by insects, and the main cause of its occurrence is a virus called “Nessling Virus” that belongs to the sheeppox family.
The company advises the necessity of using insect repellents, continuous vaccination of animals, and the use of immunity boosters, stressing that it is important to know the severity of the disease or the severity of the symptoms.
The symptoms of the disease are represented by the appearance of skin nodules, and the body temperature is often normal, and the animal’s appetite is not affected. However, the symptoms are moderate, in addition to a partial loss of the animal’s appetite. As for the symptoms, they are severe, and include the spread of large skin nodules in the body, and loss of appetite with diarrhea and respiratory symptoms.
Treatment is usually with an appropriate antibiotic, anti-allergy, and it is recommended to provide flying insect repellent.
