A third of Cuba will be in blackout due to capacity deficit

SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- A third of Cuba will be in blackout this Thursday due to a deficit in electricity generation capacity, as announced by the Electrical Union (UNE) on social networks.

In its daily report, the UNE mentions that there are breakdowns in some units of the thermoelectric plants and others have left the system due to lack of fuel.

The company of the Ministry of Energy and Mines estimates for the peak time of this Thursday, there will be an electrical generation capacity of 1,997 MegaWatts (MW) and a maximum demand of 2,800.

With this scenario, the deficit will be 803 MW and the impact will reach 873 MW.

Currently, 86 distributed generation plants, the Fuel engines of Moa and the Patana of Santiago de Cuba are out of service due to fuel for a total of 865 MW. In addition, there are 13 plants with low coverage (105 MW), reported the UNE report.

Since the beginning of the year, Cuba has faced power outages in approximately a third of its territory due to failures and maintenance work at power plants, as well as limited fuel availability.

However, the situation reached a critical point on the eve of February 14, when Cuban citizens reported blackouts in all Cuban provinces.

having asked CubaNet where they were without electricity, hundreds of people responded and showed that, simultaneously, all Cuban provinces were without electricity.

Las Tunas, Holguín, Guantánamo, Pinar del Río, Artemisa, Cienfuegos, Mayabeque, Ciego de Ávila, Camagüey, Granma, Villa Clara, Matanzas, Sancti Spíritus, Santiago de Cuba and Havana have suffered damage to the electrical service in at least one municipality.

An analysis by the Reuters news agency revealed that the Island receives an adequate supply of oil, which does not correspond to the frequent reported electricity interruptions.

According to 2021 data from the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI) cited by the news agency, Cuba produces 40,000 barrels per day (bpd) internally and receives 57,000 bpd from Venezuela and 23,000 bpd from Mexico, which adds up to a total of 129,000 bpd and exceeds the demand of the Cuban economy by 4,000 bpd.
