A storm in Córdoba caused flooding and destruction | Villa General Belgrano was one of the most affected towns

A heavy rain and hail storm hit much of the province of Córdoba this Sunday morning, causing damage to vehicles, flooding from rivers, fallen trees and power and road outages. One of the most affected centers was Villa General Belgrano, where intense rain accompanied by hail caused the stream that runs through the city to overflow. The province announced that over 270 people had been evacuated.

As part of the orange warning for severe thunderstorms issued by the National Meteorological Service (SMN), the storm began on Saturday night, and intensified in the early hours of Sunday with hail falling in Santa Rosa de Calamuchita, Villa Ciudad Parque, El Durazno , Amboy and La Canada.

The Risk Management Secretariat said 224 people had to be evacuated in the interior, mostly in the Calamuchita department, while the Municipality of Córdoba reported that 52 people in the capital had been assisted and had to temporarily abandon their homes .

The official data provided so far by the Province indicate that in some sectors the fall of water has exceeded 220 millimetres, as in the case of Los Reartes. In the city of Córdoba 165 mm were recorded between night and dawn and in Villa General Belgrano 113 mm fell.

Hail also fell in Villa General Belgrano where the streets were flooded. Images spread on social networks showed several streets filled with strong currents of water. The Civil Protection authorities are evaluating the situation.

Due to the storm, several families from Villa del Dique had to be evacuated due to water entering their homes and the Department of High Risk Units (DUAR) and the Volunteer Fire Brigade intervened. The neighborhoods of José de la Quintana, Lozada, San Isidro, Despeñaderos, Los Molinos, Río Tercero, Las Tapias and Villa de las Rosas were also heavily affected by the storms.

The Cordoba Police reported on Sunday morning on their social networks the total closure of the S-253 provincial road between Monte Ralo and Corralito. And he pointed out the existence of fog on the Camino de Las Altas Cumbres.

The flood of the rivers has reached 3 meters in some places, which is why the authorities are asking residents and tourists not to approach the canals, which could present new rises.

On the other hand, heavy rains and overflows of mountain rivers provide a significant rise in dam levels, which in most of the province are well below the ideal level for this time of year, and the latest rains will bring some relief.
