A serious complication caused by chronic stress – 2024-05-11 15:11:45

Doctors have found that chronic stress increases the risk of cancer and death by 2.5 times

According to the report of Publika.az, the results of the research conducted by the scientists of the Medical College of Georgia came to this conclusion.

In response to stress, the body releases the hormone cortisol, and its level decreases as soon as the person recovers from the stress. But if the stress has become chronic, the body begins to continuously produce this hormone.

Symptoms of high cortisol levels include: high blood pressure, mood swings, irritability, etc. As a result, all these have a negative effect on the body.

Data from 41,000 participants were studied in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, conducted from 1988 to 2019. The researchers calculated allostatic load (wear and tear on the body during chronic stress) based on the participants’ body mass index, blood pressure, cholesterol, hemoglobin, albumin, creatinine and C-reactive protein (an indicator of inflammation).

As a result, scientists found that people with high allostatic load are 2.4 times more likely to die from cancer than people with low allostatic load.

The researchers also plan to study the mechanisms underlying this relationship in the future.
