A resolution on Hungary will be presented in the US Congress – 2024-02-18 19:36:12

Two senators from the US delegation to Hungary will present a resolution to Congress condemning Budapest for delaying Sweden’s NATO membership and retreating from democracy.
The Associated Press reports this, citing the text of the document.

According to the source, the authors of the resolution noted that it is presented against the backdrop of growing pressure on the Hungarian government to ratify Sweden’s NATO membership application, which Hungary has delayed for more than 18 months.

Accepting a new ally requires the unanimous consent of all NATO member states, and Hungary is the only one of the 31 member states that did not support Sweden’s bid.

In the resolution, the senators note the important role that Hungary can play in European and transatlantic security, but emphasize not fulfilling previous promises and not joining other NATO members in confirming Sweden’s membership.

The US Embassy in Budapest announced earlier that the delegation of the US Congress will travel to the Hungarian capital on February 18 to discuss strategic issues between NATO and Hungary.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó advised American senators not to try to put pressure on Budapest regarding Sweden’s NATO membership, as Hungary is a sovereign country, its deputies do not make important decisions under the influence of foreign delegations.
