Among the publications of the Faculty of Languages, Arts and Human Sciences in Settat, a book was recently published by Bassma Publishing and Distribution House and Warraqa Bilal Press under the title “The Valley’s Waters Are Crowded with Stars.” It is a translation of 101 international haiku texts.
The book is 112 pages of medium size, and includes translations of the texts of 41 Haiku poets from around the world from French and English to Arabic, completed by 13 students belonging to the Faculty of Languages, Arts and Humanities in Settat, the course of English Studies and Translation, under the supervision of Professors Murad Al Khatibi and Idriss Ould El Haj.
Among the most prominent haiku poets, some of whose texts were translated in this book, are the Japanese poet Matsuo Bashō, the Danish poet Bo Lille, and the American haiku Jack Kerouac.
Professors Murad Al Khatibi and Idriss Ould Hajj presented the book: “The literary translation workshop organized by the Faculty of Languages, Arts and Human Sciences at Hassan I University, Settat, in its first session, in the period extending from March 3 to April 28, 2002, was devoted to haiku poetry. In its first session, more than thirty students benefited from this workshop, who learned closely about some of the problems of literary translation.
Thirteen male and female students from the Faculty of Languages, Arts and Human Sciences in Settat, first level bachelor’s degree program, specializing in English studies and translation, contributed to this book. We selected texts from international haiku in English and French, distributed them to the proposed students who translated them, then reviewed these translations and proposed the final versions.”
