A prominent African committee meets in Brazzaville on the Libyan crisis

A high-level African Union committee meeting on Libya began on Monday in the Congolese capital, Brazzaville, with the aim of paving the way for the return of peace to the country that has been witnessing a civil war since 2011, according to what a journalist at Agence France-Presse reported.
This meeting, the ninth since the establishment of the African Union Committee, comes in preparation for the national reconciliation conference scheduled for April 28 in the Libyan city of Sirte.
Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso said at the opening of the meeting, which he is also chairing, “To resolve this crisis, we have always preferred an all-inclusive Libyan dialogue as a means of reconciliation rather than prior to the electoral process.” He added, “There will be no stronger initiative than the one that comes from the hearts and minds of our Libyan brothers.” The time of war is over,” he said, describing the war in Libya as a “tragedy.”
For his part, the Chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, pointed out that “the Libyan crisis has lasted a long time and has cost its people dearly.” He added that it fueled “terrorism in the Sahel region,” noting its consequences “in terms of political destruction and instability.”

According to the African Union, the Libyan crisis is multidimensional: military, security, political, institutional, economic and financial.
Regarding the upcoming reconciliation conference, Faki Muhammad considered that “its success remains dependent on the will of the Libyans.”
Participants in the meeting, in addition to Sassou Nguesso and Faqi Mohamed, include the President of the Comoros, Ghazali Ousmani, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya, Abdullah Bathily, and the President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Menfi.
Libya has witnessed complete chaos since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, and two governments are competing for power. The first controls the west of the country, its headquarters in Tripoli and is headed by Abdul Hamid al-Dabaiba. It was formed as a result of a political dialogue in early 2021, and the other controls the east of the country and is headed by Osama Hammad.
