A piece of a meteorite… fell in Metsovo

A “fireball” as it is called, the fall of a meteoroid was recorded in the area of Metsovo by the National Observatory of Athens.

The drop took place on February 18 and the footage was made public yesterday.

As reported by the National Observatory, it was recorded by the AMS221 (Kryoneri Observatory of Corinthia) and ΑMS222 (Pendelis Observatory), which belong to IAADET/EAA (researchers A. Bonanou and A. Liakos), the ΑMS232 system (Stafidokampos of Ilia), which belongs to the Astronomical Society of Ilia “Vegas” (V. Paspaliaris, president of the association and postdoctoral researcher at INAF – Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory, Florence, Italy) and from the system of the NOAK observatory in Ioannina (N. Sioulas).

The AMS systems belong to the network, while the NOAK camera system belongs to the network

The initial estimate from the combination of the data from the four cameras is that the meteoroid entered the Greek airspace in the wider area between Ioannina and the municipality of Kalambakas, south of Metsovo and at an altitude of about 80 km from the ground. Due to the brightness of the flare it is possible that a piece of the original body has managed to survive the combustion and has reached the ground (meteorite).

“We note that we are referring to the approximate point of entry of the meteoroid into the Earth’s atmosphere, not the area of potential impact. The investigation is coordinated by IAADET researcher A. Liakos, who is trying to collect information from agencies in the wider area and from security cameras,” reports the Observatory.
