Scientists from the University of Florida found that non-invasive brain stimulation improves symptoms of depression and anxiety in older people.
Publika.az With reference to “Report”, it is reported that the results of the scientific work were published in “Brain Stimulation” magazine.
The study involved 400 elderly people with symptoms of anxiety and depressive disorders. After collecting information about health status and level of cognitive abilities, they were divided into two groups.
Participants in the first group received non-invasive brain stimulation with a weak electrical current using special devices for 12 weeks.
This treatment method is called transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Subjects from the second group received a placebo version of tDCS.
The results showed that after the current stimulation course, participants in the first group had less anxiety and depression symptoms than those in the placebo group.
This positive effect was confirmed by the data of cognitive and functional tests, as well as the results of neuroimography of the volunteers’ brains.
It was noted that the most significant improvements in mental health were demonstrated by patients who initially experienced severe depression and anxiety. For participants with moderate to severe anxiety, treatment effects persisted for a year after stimulation was stopped, the researchers added.
