A new risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease has been found – 2024-09-11 18:11:18

Unstable levels of glycated hemoglobin HbA1c are associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Publika.az reports, this is stated in a study published in “JAMA Network Open” magazine.

Scientists have analyzed the data of 374,000 diabetes patients. They were kept under surveillance for ten years. Long-term instability in glycated hemoglobin levels has been associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease and related types of dementia.

Glycated hemoglobin HbA1c is formed from the combination of glucose, which is responsible for oxygen transport, and hemoglobin. This indicator allows you to estimate the average blood glucose level for several months.

The target HbA1c range for people with diabetes is determined individually based on age, life expectancy and co-morbidities. Scientists explained that the longer a patient stays in this range, the lower his risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. At the same time, long-term low glucose levels are no less dangerous than high levels.
