A man rubs a cut potato on a frozen windshield: then magic happens

There are many time-consuming and expensive methods for removing ice, but now one YouTuber has shared an unusual and ingenious method for defrosting a car window using a very common food.

The YouTube channel Smart Fox, known for its lifestyle tips, home improvement tips and cleaning tricks, released a video encouraging drivers to remove ice from their windshields using a potato.

In the video, which has received 931,000 views, the narrator describes the alternative method as “absolutely amazing.”

He explains: “Before I tell you about the benefits, I’ll show you exactly how to do it. Cut the potato and clean the cut surface on the window. By doing this, you spread the liquid that comes out of the potato onto your windshield. There’s a completely scientific reason for this , and is used in many places around the world.”

There are alternative methods to simply cutting the potato in half, and Smart Fox suggests cutting the potato into smaller slices to spread more liquid on the windshield.

They also say that you can use potato peel as long as you replace it regularly with a new piece to prevent it from wearing out completely.

“By rubbing the windshield with the potato, we distribute the sugar contained in the potato onto the windshield,” explains the life hack specialist.

“This ensures that no water can stick to it and therefore no ice forms. This means that you can actually prevent your car from freezing in winter.”

If you know the temperature will drop below freezing at night, the YouTuber recommends wiping your windshield with a potato the night before to prevent the windows from freezing.

The potato is not the only kitchen product that can help fight frost on windows; Lemon juice and onion are also mentioned as effective alternatives.
