A former Google engineer has been charged in California with stealing secrets related to AI (artificial intelligence) and transferring them to two Chinese companies. This was reported by Reuters.
It is said that the former Google software engineer stole AI-related trade secrets from the Alphabet company. A 38-year-old Chinese national, Linwei Ding, was indicted by the San Francisco Federal Court on four counts of theft of trade secrets. Dean was arrested on the morning of February 6 at his mansion in Newark.
Linwei Ding joined Google in 2019 and downloaded more than 500 secret files by May 2023.
Exactly one year before this incident, the US President Joe Biden’s administration created a special unit whose purpose is to prevent Russia or China from acquiring leading technologies from the US, as this could threaten the country’s national security.
According to the indictment, Linwei stole detailed information about the hardware and software platform that allows Google’s supercomputer data centers to train large AI models using machine learning. The stolen information also contained details about chips and various systems.
Linwei Ding faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each count.
