At RSC Anderlecht they have a lot of wealth in some positions, in others there is a clear shortage. Brian Riemer has to figure things out ahead. Will former Peter Verbeke transfer get another chance? He could be the last.
Anderlecht brought Nilson Angulo to Belgium for 1.9 million euros in the summer of 2022. He was known as a talent in his country, but the move to the Jupiler Pro League turned out to be a very big step. Angulo couldn’t handle the level. It also didn’t help that he arrived after Vincent Kompany’s cycle.
The club made one bad choice after another and he found himself in a team that wasn’t well composed. Anderlecht finished 11th. Angulo was allowed to appear for the first team in 11 matches. He played 124 minutes with 0 goals and 0 assists. Angulo struggled with pace and also had to make a lot of progress in terms of physical ability.
Steps taken at RSCA Futures
Brian Riemer arrived at Anderlecht and Angulo was allowed to work in the shadows at Futures. He finished the season there with 2 goals and 0 assists in 736 minutes (11 games). He wasn’t convincing enough in this regard. Angulo wasn’t in Riemer’s plans this summer, but leaving was never really an option.
At Futures he had to take the next step. The Ecuador player did it. Angulo, who has made many strides in terms of strength and endurance, has played 14 matches in the Challenger Pro League this season. Record: 5 goals and 1 assist in 1,159 minutes.
Riemer recently made it clear that within Anderlecht they believe in the 20-year-old winger. “With Angulo, we at RSCA Futures have a type of winger who can eventually progress to the first team. Is it in January, April or next season? We will see this in the coming weeks and months. He is doing very well for Futures and is a player with many qualities that we really believe in.”
Decisive against KRC Genk
Angulo came on as a substitute in the 89th minute against KRC Genk. He was sent deep into extra time, then tracked the ball and fed Théo Leoni. He passed the ball well to Anders Dreyer and the Dane made it 2-1. Angulo was thus involved in the victory. This must have given him a lot of confidence.
Riemer took him on an internship in Tunisia. Angulo has an excellent opportunity to convince the coach. After a year and a half, can Riemer finally let Angulo come to fruition? If the player doesn’t know how to persevere now, it seems to be the end of the story. So these will be important weeks and months for Angulo.
