The cassation appeal against the 12-year prison sentence against the former head of the Main Investigation Department of the Ministry of National Security (MTN) Movlam Shikhaliyev was reviewed.
Publika.az Referring to “Qafqazinfo”, it is reported that the lawyer of convicted Shikhaliyev, Jeyhun Yusifov, spoke at the meeting held at the Supreme Court.
In his speech, lawyer Yusifov said that his client is innocent of the charges and demanded acquittal from the high court.
At the same meeting, the complaints of former employees Yasin Mammadov, Vusal Alekbarov and Sahib Alekbarov, who were convicted together with Movlam Shikhaliyev, were considered. Their lawyers also asked for acquittal.
The prosecutor stated that there was no violation of the law in the decision of the appellate authority and demanded that the appeals be rejected.
The court panel chaired by Nazim Movsumov announced the decision after listening to the speeches of the parties.
The court did not satisfy any of the complaints. The decision of the Baku Court of Appeal was kept unchanged.
It should be recalled that in 2008-2014, when M. Shikhaliyev worked as the head of the Main Investigation Department of the National Security Service, he was accused of extorting large sums of money from businessmen as part of an organized gang with Vusal Alakbarov, Yasin Mammadov and Sahib Alakbarov. M.Shikhaliyev was found guilty of taking 14 million 292 thousand manats as bribes and 5 million 77 thousand manats as threats in the case of an organized gang.
By the verdict of the Baku Military Court, Movlam Shikhaliyev was sentenced to 12 years, Vusal Alekbarov to 12 years and 6 months, Yasin Mammadov to 10 years and 6 months, and Sahib Alekbarov to 8 years.
M. Shikhaliyev was deprived of the rank of general, and his property was confiscated by the state.
