The fourth edition of the Safi Sea Festival celebrated, last Saturday evening, the sardines, which are a symbol of the “ocean city” and have earned it fame on both the national and international levels.
On this occasion, the Sardine Festival was held; a celebration of tasting grilled sardines in the ancient Diwana Square and the “Ras Al-Afa’i” area, which attracted a large audience of different ages from the city’s residents and visitors from inside and outside Morocco who made the pilgrimage to enjoy one of the most famous and popular dishes in the city of Safi, which tops the list of daily dishes of the Safiwis due to its important nutritional benefits.
It is known that sardines, thanks to this method of cooking on the grill, which is linked to the traditions of our ancestors, preserve all their nutritional benefits, including calcium, vitamins and Omega 3.
The organizing committee of the Sea Festival, held over three days by the Tigalin Industrial Fishing Association in Safi, worked to provide the necessary means and equipment to make this event a success, which was held in a festive atmosphere characterized by street art performances that won the admiration and appreciation of those present.
Hassan Al-Saadouni, President of the Tigalin Industrial Fishing Association in Safi, pointed out that holding a grilled sardine tasting party in the ancient and historical square “Al-Diwana” near the old port aims to provide the city’s residents with the opportunity to recall the history of this square, which was a space for entertainment and commercial activity and which can be used to hold many cultural activities.
Al-Saadouni pointed out, in a press statement, the great turnout of the city’s residents and guests to taste the grilled sardines dish, as well as the distinguished presence of young people through street art shows that contributed to revitalizing the old city area with its historical significance.
On the other hand, the President of the Tigalin Association for Industrial Fishing in Safi confirmed that the Sea Festival contributes to highlighting the touristic character of the city of Safi and introducing its rich and diverse heritage and touristic qualifications.
The audience also had a date with a diverse artistic evening on the Moulay Youssef Square stage, which was enlivened by a group of national and local artists and local musical bands.
The large crowds, who came in large numbers, enjoyed a selection of songs from the Moroccan song repertoire performed by artists Donia Jari, Mohamed Moussaid, Sherifa, and the Bourgui Orchestra, in addition to Gnawa and rap music.
The Sea Festival, organized in partnership with the Safi Province, the Safi Territorial Community, the North Atlantic Fishing Chamber and the Office Chérifien des Phosphates, aims to celebrate the sea, its beauty and its generosity through its ancient history and other vital sectors such as culture, art, economy, music and the environment; through stations where the culture of the inhabitants blends with the professionals with the spiritual side, from which professionals who love spiritual music, which is one of the pillars of art in the city, draw.
The festival also seeks to demonstrate the close relationship between many cultural arts and the sea, including the customs and traditions of the city’s inhabitants through the influence of the sea and the symbolism of the city’s port, along with introducing the richness, heritage and intermingling of the many civilizations that have succeeded it in the sea of the Safi region.
The program of this event, entitled “Sardines”, includes segments that combine the spiritual and religious aspects, customs, traditions and development, and present a true and wonderful image of the ocean capital whose name is associated with the sardines, with which it created an international status that led it to be, until the beginning of 1970, the international capital of sardines. These segments include artistic evenings, street art shows and fireworks.
