Today marks the end of a week-long demonstration of solidarity with Cuba, culminating in a march and rally in front of the White House. This event has seen participation from over 30 cities in the United States and various locations worldwide.
The campaign, titled “Take Cuba off the List of State Sponsors of Terror,” aims to challenge the policies of the current Biden administration towards Cuba. Activist Carlos Lazo, who traveled from Seattle, stated that representatives from more than a hundred solidarity organizations will demand the removal of Cuba from the list of terrorist countries and the lifting of the blockade.
Professor Lazo, coordinator of the Bridges of Love movement, expressed his anticipation for a busy and impactful day. Elena Freyre, president of the Alianza Martiana Coalition, emphasized the need for President Biden to fulfill his promises and end the additional sanctions imposed by the previous administration.
During his election campaign, Biden pledged to reverse Trump’s policies towards Cuba and restore the approach taken during the Obama era. Miledys Guzman, a young medical graduate of Dominican origin, shared her love for Cuba and the unity she feels in the fight against the unilateral siege imposed on the country.
The week of solidarity included various events, such as a spiritual gathering organized by the DC Metro Coalition, where participants conveyed their message for Cuba through music and prayer. Alejandro Pila, deputy head of the Cuban Mission in the United States, expressed gratitude for the expressions of solidarity and reiterated that Cuba’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism is both illegal and immoral.
The cultural segment of the event featured performances by the Afrodelica duo and Luci Murphy, an interpreter who considers Cuba her second homeland.
