A 6.4 magnitude earthquake shakes Peru for the second consecutive night

Beryl became the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season this afternoon. It is expected to become a Category 3 hurricane during its path and is currently located 4,190 kilometers east of the coast of Quintana Roo.

According to information from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), located in Miami, Beryl is now a hurricane and is forecast to intensify rapidly. It is expected to bring life-threatening winds and storm surge to the Windward Islands as a major hurricane, meaning at least Category 3.

At the time of intensifying into a hurricane, it was located 1,160 kilometers from Barbados with maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour (km/h).

Path of Hurricane Beryl
At 4 p.m. Quintana Roo time, the center of Hurricane Beryl was moving westward near 35 km/h. A relatively rapid westward to west-northwestward motion is expected during the next few days.

On the forecast track, the center of Beryl is expected to move across the Windward Islands on Sunday night and Monday.

Beryl is forecast to evolve into a Category 2 hurricane on Sunday; and on Monday it strengthens and becomes a category 3, or a major hurricane.

On Wednesday, it is expected to begin to lose strength and become a Category 2 again, and on Thursday, when it is located near Jamaica, it will be a Category 1 hurricane again, on its way to the Mexican coast.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher gusts. Continued to rapid strengthening is forecast, and Beryl is expected to become a dangerous major hurricane before it reaches the Windward Islands.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 20 km from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 95 km.
