A 5-year-old girl who had her chin impaled by an iron railing after falling from the door she climbed in Mersin, escaped from life-threatening danger thanks to the surgery she underwent at Mersin University (MEÜ) Faculty of Medicine Hospital.
While playing with his friends in front of their house in Cumhuriyet Neighborhood of the Yenişehir Central District on August 9, 5-year-old Rahif Mobaed, a Syrian national, lost his balance on the door of a building he climbed.
The first aid to the girl, whose chin was impaled by an iron railing where she fell, was given by the fire department and medical teams dispatched to the scene.
After firefighters cut off part of the railing, Mobaed was taken to MEU Medical Faculty Hospital and underwent surgery to remove the 10-centimeter piece of iron remaining in his jaw.
The piece was removed in a 1-hour operation performed by MEU Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases Department Assistant Professor Kemal Koray Bal, Assistant Research Assistant Abdullah Hilmi Uslu and Assistant Research Assistant Bilge Baycık.
After 2 days of treatment in intensive care, Mobaed opened his eyes and was transferred to the inpatient ward.
“The patient is very lucky”
Assistant Professor Kemal Koray Bal told AA that they plan to discharge the child, whose life is out of danger, in a short time.
Bal, who stated that they prepared for the operation by performing radiology examinations, said, “Fire teams removed a part of the object, but it was not possible to remove the whole thing. We started the surgery by making a hole in the throat, anticipating that there might be a problem in the respiratory tract.”
Bal emphasized that the iron was extracted from risky places and said:
“We analyzed the proximity of the object to the vascular structures well. The piece was 2 centimeters away from the entrance point of the carotid artery to the brain. We removed it without damaging the neural and vascular structures. We could have damaged the object while removing it and encountered unwanted results including death, but thank God, such a situation did not occur. There is a wound line of approximately 2 centimeters, but I do not think it will cause a permanent scar. There was no damage to the eye after the surgery. Although the patient was injured very severely, there was no nerve damage. The patient was very lucky to get rid of this problem with a successful surgery.”
Mother Alaa Cheikh Ibrahim also said that she did not know what to do when she first saw her daughter after the incident.
Stating that the teams and medical personnel were mobilized for her child, İbrahim said, “Alhamdulillah, my daughter is very well now. I thank everyone.”
