A young woman living in the Netherlands has decided to legally end her life due to mental health issues.
Publika.az reports that Zoraya Ter Beek, who lives in a small village in the Netherlands near the border with Germany, wants to be euthanized because she is struggling with severe depression, autism and borderline personality disorder.
The 28-year-old, who once dreamed of becoming a psychiatrist, has struggled with mental health issues throughout her life.
He explained that he decided on this method after his doctors said, “There is nothing else we can do for you.”
“My condition will never improve,” said the young woman.
Zoraya lives with her 40-year-old boyfriend and two cats. He will legally end his life in May.
“Free Press” writes that the number of people in Europe who are not terminally ill, but who choose to die rather than continue to live in spiritual pain, is increasing. Due to economic uncertainty, climate change, social media and other nuances, more people are choosing to end their lives suffering from mental health problems such as depression or anxiety.
“I’m now seeing euthanasia as an acceptable option brought to the table by doctors and psychiatrists, whereas it used to be a last resort. I observe this phenomenon in people with psychiatric diseases, and especially in young people, who are more easily rejected by health workers than before,” said Stef Hunewud, an expert on health care at the Kampen University of Theology in the Netherlands.
It should be noted that the Netherlands became the first country in the world to legalize physician-assisted suicide in 2001. Since then, euthanasia has become an increasingly popular option.
According to the Dutch media, 8720 people died in the country as a result of euthanasia in 2022. This represents about 5% of all deaths in the country, an increase of 1% from the previous year.
In February, 93-year-old former Dutch Prime Minister Dries van Agt and his wife ended their lives by euthanasia.
