The General Agricultural Cooperative of Ioannina “Union of Farmers” was visited by the Member of Parliament of Ioannina and Deputy Secretary of the Parliamentary Group of PASOK-Movement of Change, Yannis Tsimaris where he met with its president, Haris Liouris and the members of the Board of Directors.
During the meeting, Mr. Tsimaris was informed by the president and the members present about the enormous problems that one of the most important pillars of the Greek economy, the primary sector, is facing today, with an emphasis on the geographical area of Epirus.
The discussion focused on production costs which have skyrocketed, the steady demand for tax-free agricultural oil as well as maintaining a stable price on the agricultural stream. The main demands of the Union include the reduction of VAT on basic food items as well as the protection of producer prices from unfair trade practices, the completion by the FSAAT of the process of control mechanisms and the immediate implementation of “ARTEMIS 2”.
Both the Member of Parliament of Ioannina and the Administration made special reference to the issue of regulation of livestock farmers’ loans while all agreed on the necessity of creating a strategic plan for the primary sector with policies that will provide a vision for the sector for the coming years. Issues raised by the president of PASOK-Kin.Al. Mr. N. Androulakis during the discussion of the current question about farmers in the Parliament.
For his part, Mr. Tsimaris pledged to closely monitor through parliamentary control the course of the claims of the people in the primary sector who breathe life into the countryside as well as the promotion of their just demands.
