With the ticket at stake and the breath of more than 20,000 fans at the Cuscatlán Stadium, the National Team of El Salvador managed to advance to the third and last round of the qualifiers towards the World Cup in North America 2026, after drawing 1-1 with Surinam.
The team led by Hernán Darío Gómez repeated the alignment he used in the triumph against Anguilla, despite previous criticism for his performance. This time, he had to face an orderly and competitive rival, who appeared as leader of Group F and demonstrated from the beginning that he would not be an accessible rival.
Surinam was ahead on the scoreboard at the 19th minute with a goal by Justin Lonwijk, taking advantage of a defensive deconcentration after the lesion of Álex Larín’s injury. However, El Salvador managed to tie before the break, in a collective play between Tamacas, Gil, Ordaz and Henríquez who culminated in both Brayan Gil at minute 32.
During the second part, the national team was stronger in defense, but without offensive clarity. Although the tie was enough to qualify, the fans expected more ambition. The final result, added to the 2-1 triumph of Puerto Rico over San Vicente and the Grenadines, generated nervousness in the stands and left whistles after the final whistle.
With 20,675 attendees, Cuscatlán lived a tense night but celebrated the advance. The select met the minimum objective, although the field performance leaves pending tasks for the next elimination commitments.
