Cycling to work reduces the risk of mental health problems.
Publika.az with reference to foreign media reports that a study conducted on about 380,000 people living in Scotland suggests this.
According to research from the University of Edinburgh, commuting by bike is very beneficial for women’s mental health, but men are more likely to cycle. The researchers combined data on 378,253 people aged 16-74 from the 2011 census in Scotland with records from the following five years. The people surveyed lived and worked in Edinburgh or Glasgow, and their homes were within two kilometers of a cycle path. As a result, it was determined that depression or anxiety problems were reduced by 15 percent among cyclists compared to non-cyclists. The data showed that just two per cent of commuters cycle to work in Glasgow, compared to just under five per cent in Edinburgh.
Professor Chris Dibben of the University of Edinburgh’s School of Geosciences, who led the study, said the research that this affordable and sustainable method improves mental health supports policies to invest in cycleways and encourage active walking. Not only does this improve people’s mental health, it can also help reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.
