Elisabeth Baume-Schneider’s baptism into the club of health ministers took place this Tuesday at the first OECD ministerial meeting on this topic after the covid crisis. About thirty members of the government met in the Paris headquarters of the institution, with prestigious names such as those of the German minister Karl Lauterbach or the American Xavier Becerra. The perfect opportunity for the Jurassian to get to know his counterparts.
This first outing on the international stage as head of the federal Department of the Interior comes as the world is just emerging from “the worst public health emergency in more than a century,” according to the event’s organizers. Enough to create connections between the ministers of the time? And make the circle more difficult to integrate? Walking through the corridors of the OECD building in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, Elisabeth Baume-Schneider puts things into perspective: “Most of the health ministers from the time of the pandemic are no longer in office today. There is no longer any minister who was in office during the last OECD Ministry of Health, 7 years ago. But it is true that I spoke with two ministers who had an excellent relationship with my predecessor, Alain Berset. But the ministers are there above all to talk about the present and the future.”
