At the recent CES 2024 event in Las Vegas, Acer caught everyone’s attention with the launch of the Predator Helios 18, a laptop that not only boasts advanced specs but also a one-of-a-kind hinge. This model represents a perfect mix of innovation and performance, ideal for technology enthusiasts looking for more than just power in their equipment.
Getting to know Acer’s new Predator Helios
The exterior of the Predator Helios 18 retains its renowned matte black design, with similar weight and dimensions to its predecessor (7.17 pounds and 1.14 inches thick). However, what really stands out is its new hinge, adorned with a sequence of RGB lights, known as the Infinity Mirror light bar. This feature is not only visually appealing but also adds a unique touch to the device.
Acer has introduced innovative MagKey 3.0 on the Helios 18’s WASD buttons, allowing users to customize not only the keys but also the mechanical switches underneath. This feature highlights Acer’s commitment to providing a personalized and adaptable gaming experience. Although only a pre-production model was shown at CES, the promise of this technology raises expectations.
In terms of performance, the Predator Helios 18 has been updated with an Intel Core i9-14900X CPU, capable of supporting up to 32GB of RAM and 4TB of storage. Furthermore, it includes the NVIDIA RTX 4090 graphics card. To keep the system cool and efficient, Acer has implemented fifth generation Aeroblade 3D fans and opted for liquid metal thermal grease, significantly improving heat dissipation.
Considering its starting price of $2,000, the Helios 18 offers good connectivity, including Wi-Fi 7 and a wide range of ports. The screen has also received a major upgrade, moving to a 250Hz mini LED panel with a maximum brightness of 1000 nits and 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 spectrum, ensuring an improvement in the image.
For those who prefer a smaller laptop, Acer will also launch the Predator Helios 16, offering similar specs in a more compact chassis. Additionally, the more affordable versions, the Predator Helios Neo 18 and Neo 16, will be available with 16- and 18-inch screens and GPU options up to an RTX 4070, offering alternatives for different budgets.
