Hospital resistant to magnitude 9 earthquake begins accepting patients

The steel-framed hospital rebuilt after the earthquake has been put into service

GAZİANTEP – The New Oğuzeli State Hospital, built on 284 steel structures after the earthquake and resistant to magnitude 9, was completed and put into service.

Oğuzeli State Hospital, which was damaged by the 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş, was rebuilt in a short period of 7 months on 284 iron structures in a closed area of 12,114 square meters as a result of the determination and efforts of Chief Physician Dr. Lecturer Sedat Özdemir. The hospital, which was made resistant to even a 9 magnitude earthquake, aims to provide uninterrupted health services in the Oğuzeli district after the disaster of the century that Turkey has experienced.

Immediately after the earthquake, the hospital team took action quickly and began providing health services at a school in the district. During this process, emergency health services were provided with tents set up in the schoolyard with the help of Japanese health teams. Following these temporary services, the container hospital established by NATO on the old hospital grounds continued to provide health services in the region. However, with the start of hospital construction, the NATO container hospital was evacuated and health services were moved to the Martyr Halil Ejder Polat Barracks. Oğuzeli State Hospital, which had been providing services in this area for about a year, moved to the newly constructed area and began accepting patients.

The New Oğuzeli State Hospital began providing service to the district with 19 polyclinics, 24 emergency department observation areas, 68 bed capacity, 12 adult intensive care units, 4 neonatal intensive care units, 6 palliative care beds, 5-bed dialysis center and 3 operating rooms. An earthquake-resistant structure was built with 284 foley piles used in the hospital structure, prioritizing the strength of the building.
